Phyllis Joy Stumbo
It is with great sadness that I send the heartbreaking news of the passing of Phyllis Stumbo. Phyllis died Tuesday evening, having suffered a fall after voting at her local courthouse. She never regained consciousness and passed away that night.
It is truly an understatement to say that Phyllis will be deeply missed by all who knew her, and her loss will be keenly felt within the nutrient databank community. Phyllis played an integral role in the National Nutrient Databank Conference (NNDC) from the early days and was recognized for her tireless efforts with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2014 meeting. Over the years, Phyllis served as chair of the Executive Committee; chaired numerous conferences; was the guest editor for four editions of the conference proceedings; served as historian; and contributed her time, enthusiasm and expertise in so many ways.
Arrangements are being handled by the Fry Funeral Home. Cathy Chenard is working with the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to publish Phyllis’ obituary. If you would like to add your personal comments about your work with Phyllis, please contact Cathy at email@example.com. Phyllis’ family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Tipton Ambulance Service, 407 Lynn St., Tipton, IA 52772 (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Members of the NNDC have expressed an interest in making a donation from the NNDC in Phyllis’ memory. If you would like to join us, you may make a donation by using the NNDC PayPal account or by mailing a donation to Rose Tobelmann (National Nutrient Databank Conference, Attn: Rose Tobelmann, Treasurer, 415 Sycamore Lane, Plymouth, MN 55441). Please include a note that the donation is in memory of Phyllis. We are also considering other ways to preserve Phyllis’ legacy within the NNDC. These will be announced soon.
On behalf of the NNDC Executive Committee,
Thea Palmer Zimmerman
